The very nature of the majority of the destinations we feature here at Artisan Travel means that on many of our holidays you will get the chance to encounter some exceptional wildlife.

Travelling above the Arctic in winter may give you the chance to see the elusive Snow Grouse for example and of course you are more than likely to encounter reindeer.

Summer in our European destinations provides the chance to see a wide variety of exquisite birdlife and in destinations such as Iceland, whale-watching is a real highlight.

There are however a few locations we offer which are renowned for specific wildlife encounters – true bucket list stuff.

During our holidays in Alaska in the summer months our itineraries lead you through prime bear watching territory! Black, brown and grizzly bears can all be encountered and there can be few more majestic sites in the natural world. Whales, dolphins and sea otters can be viewed during the coastal excursions that we offer and bald eagles can be spotted in relative abundance.

In the Yukon the bears are again at the top of the highlight list but encounters with herds of caribou and gigantic moose can also be regular.

Along the coast of Norway the bird life can be wonderful during the summer and migrating whales can be sighted on occasion. Our holidays in Tromsø offer the chance to join sea eagle safaris, puffin watching trips and whale-watching cruises.

For another whale-watching treat many of our Icelandic holidays include whale-watching from Reykjavik harbour or it can be included in almost all of the trips. The sight of a breaching humpback whale is iconic and something that few people are ever likely to forget. Minke whales, porpoises and dolphins are also very regular visitors to guests on the cruises.

Iceland is also famous for its birdlife and the seabirds that live here are a delight to behold and the variety of birds that can be seen is unlikely to be equalled.

We know that some guests may wish to have a more dedicated focus on wildlife during their holidays and if this is the case then please do not hesitate to discuss it with our travel experts. We can often arrange additional activities and utilise our guides' local knowledge and expertise to personalise the itineraries to include more wildlife encounters or get advice on the best locations to visit independently should you wish to do so during your holiday.
