Lapland refers to the northernmost wilderness regions of Finland as well as parts of Sweden and Norway, covering a vast region above the Arctic Circle. Owing to its extreme northerly location, it offers visitors a unique holiday experience. Summer months in Lapland are long, with continuous daylight from June to August in stunning contrast to the long polar nights of winter where the sun barely rises above the horizon. These dark nights however ensures classic conditions for a display of the Northern Lights which are spotted here with great frequency. In the autumn months of September and October, the landscape also comes alive with the golden, red and orange colours of 'Ruska'.

The regional capital is the small city of Rovaniemi but our holidays to Lapland take you across the whole region from the enticingly remote Northern Finland to the dazzling fjords of Norway to the mountains Sweden. A plethora of forests, mountains, fells, rivers, and lakes await you in Lapland.

The region is also of course home to Father Christmas, ensuring its great popularity as a family destination, but rest assured Artisan Travel is dedicated to adult travel and Lapland is a uniquely wonderful location for adults. If you are looking for a family holiday please visit our sister site

First and foremost there are a huge amount of winter activities for both adventurous and relaxed visitors and endless opportunities to make the most of this incredible landscape during our Lapland holidays. Traditional activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing enjoy great popularity here and are enjoyed as much by locals as well as tourists with designated tracks to explore the scenery and wildlife. For thrill seekers and those wishing to cover greater distances, snowmobiles are the transport of choice. As well as being fun, they have also become vital to the many remote communities here, ensuring vital communication is maintained even in the depths of winter.

The animals of Lapland are numerous and form a part of the popular activities here. Husky sledding is one of the most sought out activities in Lapland, and those that have experienced the sheer joy of being pulled through the snow-topped forest by an eager team of dogs will tell you it is an experience not to be missed. Ice fishing is another popular activity in Lapland, utilised to hunt for food, but also as an enjoyable pastime. Reindeers are also synonymous with Lapland, and, as well as having great importance in children's imagination as they pull Father Christmas's sled across the sky, their importance with regards to the culture, traditions, and lifestyle of Lapland are not to be underestimated.

Reindeers form one of the key occupations for the majority of the Sámi people here. The Sámi community are the indigenous people of the Lapland region, semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers who made their home in this unique region approximately 4000 years ago, making them one of the oldest cultures in Europe. Recognised and protected under international conventions, the Sámi people today get their livelihood mainly from reindeer herding but also from farming, fishing, hunting and handicraft.

At Artisan we incorporate as much Sámi culture into our Lapland holidays as we can to allow a deeper understanding of this fascinating culture.
