Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing has been utilised in the winter as a means of hunting, wood gathering and travelling between remote communities for almost 500 years.

The sport is part of the 'Nordic Skiing' family (with other varieties including ski jumping and ski orienteering) and involves propelling yourself across the snow using long, narrow skis and poles. Across Scandinavia, it is hugely popular and one of the most adored pastimes.

When travelling here in the winter you are highly likely to see adults and children of all ages travelling this way across the snow, as the Arctic landscape is a haven for skiers. Cross-country skiing is also a brilliant way to keep fit.

It has also developed in to a popular competitive sport and is said to be one of the most difficult endurance sports, due to it using nearly every major muscle group. However, on our trips, the excursions are not overly exerting and you will be given full instructions.

We have found with guests in the past that cross-country skiing is often approached with a fair amount of ambivalence, seemingly lacking the excitement of downhill skiing and other winter activities and apparently a little bit too much like hard work! However, guests tend to be pleasantly surprised as there is something rather enjoyable about navigating the landscape in this manner as soon as you have mastered the basics.

Its popularity across Scandinavia ensures that there are multiple trails and ski routes for you to explore that will take you deep into the pristine wilderness.

Admittedly cross-country skiing may not be for everyone but with a little practice and patience, you will hopefully discover why the people of Lapland love it so.
